Sporting Life 10k Virtual Run

What is a virtual run?
A virtual run can be completed on your own from any location you choose, on the day that you choose, at your own pace. You can run, jog, or walk on a road, on a trail, or a treadmill, at the gym, or on the track.

Why is the Sporting Life 10k changing to a virtual run?
Everyone’s health and safety is our top priority. We’re observing the same protocols as others around the world to minimize risks to everyone due to COVID-19. A virtual run will minimize risks, while still raising crucial funds to send kids with cancer to Camp Ooch.

Why should I fundraise for the Sporting Life 10k Virtual Run?
The Sporting Life 10k raises vital funds for Ooch. Year-round Community, In-Hospital and Overnight Camp programs across Ontario deliver fun, friendship and a sense of community at any stage of a child’s cancer journey. Childhood cancer affects thousands of kids and families in Ontario, and even today, our program specialists are reaching out virtually to young patients in the hospital, and continuing their vital (and virtual) connections with campers and their families at home in isolation. Soon, we will be back together. Kids with cancer still need the chance to just be kids—they still need camp. Amazing runners like you can still make the Magic of Camp happen—now’s our chance to prove it.

Will there still be Camp programs happening this year?
Yes! We are more than a summer camp. Our programs run year round all across the province. We’re focused on meeting our Campers’ needs during this pandemic by delivering virtual camp programs that reach children in hospitals, or families at home—until it’s safe to be together again. Even summer 2020 virtual programs are in active development! There are 1,800 children, plus 745 families who rely on us every day to brighten their world—and that’s only a fraction of the 4,200 kids across the province affected by cancer.

Can I donate without running? Or donate extra?
Of course! You can donate any amount. All proceeds go to Camp Ooch, providing critical funds to ensure essential camp programs continue at no cost to kids and families battling childhood cancer. To donate, please click here

Other solutions in the meantime include Runkeeper, Strava, Zwift, and Nike+. You can also use a GPS-equipped smartwatch, like a Garmin (or some versions of the Apple Watch) to record running distance. Or, kick it old school, and drive a route using your car’s odometer to measure it before running, walking, or jogging your route!

How do I track my run, my time, or my pace?
At present, we do not have a system in place to track runners, but our race platform provider is working on it—stay tuned! Until then, commonly used platforms for individual athletes are Garmin, Strava, Runkeeper, Zwift, and Nike+.

What is the charitable cause?
Camp Ooch, established in 1983, is a privately funded, volunteer based organization that provides kids with cancer with unique opportunities for growth through challenging, fun, enriching and magical experiences. For more than 30 years, we have provided hope in a time where there feels like there can be none, self-esteem when kids are at their lowest and laughter, a seemingly impossible act during a child’s illness. Ooch programs are provided to campers at absolutely no cost to their families. As a registered charity that receives no government funding, Camp Ooch relies on events like the Sporting Life 10k to ensure that every kid has the opportunity to experience camp. In January 2020, Camp Ooch and Camp Trillium merged, with a shared goal to broaden and deepen support for kids and families across Ontario.
